Trust the Plan, not the Planner

My husband passed away, which totally changed my life pattern.  Two years later I retired.  My days became kind of free-floating.  I needed some structure.  So, I turned to a planner.  The old-fashioned kind that you actually wrote in.  I know.  My iPhone has a calendar.  I tried that for months.  I wanted a book where I could see everything at a glance.

For two years I used a Passion Planner.  It was ok, but not great.  Not enough room to write certain things and too much room for things that didn’t matter to me.  As I searched online for a better one, I came across a page that could be printed out.  8 ½ by 11 size.  I could make that work.

I’m big on using binders.  So, I created one that has a cover page which states “Daily Planner” … “Life by Design”.  After printing out 30 pages, I placed my new planner on the kitchen counter…ready to use. As the days and months have passed, I have found it to be most helpful.

However, I discovered that my plans didn’t always coincide with what actually happened.  Plans got changed.  Appointments canceled.  Divine appointments re-arranged my day.

In talking with my daughter about my new creation and its effectiveness (or lack thereof) she said something that stuck with me.

“Trust the Plan, not the planner”.

We can plan our day.  But God knows the Plan.  The title Life by Design is accurate only if I’m not the designer.

“This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans….”
