This morning my thoughts are in Maryland. According to news reports, night before last eight men went to work at their night shift. On a bridge. Several hours in, they took a meal break. Were they sitting around laughing and talking? Sharing stories of family? Of trips they had planned? Of the house they were going to buy?
In the blink of an eye, their world disappeared. The actual bridge beneath their feet fell (according to what I read) 185 feet into the river below. Two have been rescued. Six are presumed dead.
When they left for work, did they kiss their wives goodbye? Or was it just so routine she had already gone to bed, and they quietly left? What about the children? They expected their dad to be home and in bed when they went off to school. No dad came home from work.
Did they think they would die that night?
What about you…and me? Are we prepared for death? Do we think it’s years in the future and not something to reflect about now? There are countless ways our life could end in the blink of an eye.
I’m trying to live ready, so I am free to enjoy the life I have.
“It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.” I Corinthians 15:52 (NLT)
